Thousands protested in Buenos Aires following the murders of three women, an incident that included the alleged live-streaming of their torture and killing on a private Instagram account, reportedly viewed by 45 users.
The victims were identified as Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, both 20-year-old cousins, and 15-year-old Lara Gutierrez. Their bodies were discovered buried on Wednesday. Relatives, including Brenda del Castillo’s father, Leonel del Castillo, joined the demonstrations, marching to Parliament with banners bearing the victims’ names and photos. Mr. del Castillo emphasized the necessity of protecting women.
Authorities have released a photo of a 20-year-old Peruvian, identified as the alleged mastermind behind the killings, who remains at large. A cousin of the victims, Federico Celebon, informed AFP that the women occasionally engaged in sex work “to survive” and suggested they were “in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.”
