During Dussehra celebrations in Delhi, a 30-foot effigy of a cockroach was burned along with traditional figures of Ravan, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnad. The event took place at Netaji Subhash Place and was organized by the Shri Keshav Ram Leela Committee.
Organizers stated that the cockroach effigy symbolized filth and aimed to raise awareness about health issues like allergies and asthma, promoting cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi campaigns. The committee president, Ashok Goel Devaraha, a BJP MLA, mentioned that an effigy representing a social problem is burned annually.
The move drew criticism from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke thanked the organizers for what he called “free publicity.” CJP legal head Ratna Singh described the incident as a “spectacle” and suggested it indicated the CJP was making an impact.
Delhi minister Kapil Mishra responded to criticism by stating that “political termites” felt the pain from the cockroach effigy, which he described as a symbol of filth and chaos. He added that the public has its own “pesticide” for such elements.
