The results of recent byelections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Reserved Assembly constituencies have strengthened the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (DMK) standing as the primary alternative to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The DMK secured second place in both contests, indicating that the party has maintained a significant portion of its voter base.
This performance is notable as the DMK largely contested without its usual allies, suggesting that a united front could enhance its future electoral success. While the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) joined the DMK-led alliance before the Assembly election, other former partners like the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist parties, and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) were absent.
In Dharapuram, the DMK’s vote count decreased compared to the Assembly election, a decline that could be partly attributed to lower voter turnout and the absence of its former allies. The TVK, despite changes in candidate affiliations, also did not match the vote count previously achieved by the AIADMK in the same constituency during the general election.
Similarly, in Madurantakam, the DMK’s vote count saw a reduction, potentially influenced by the departure of allies like the VCK.
