The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced a significant simplification of the process for Indian citizens to virtually apply for and obtain attestation or apostille of their documents through the e-Sanad portal. This revised procedure, confirmed by a senior MEA official in Chennai, eliminates the requirement for documents to be physically sent to New Delhi for processing.

As part of the streamlined system, more universities and educational institutions in Tamil Nadu have been integrated into the e-Sanad platform, with the attestation and apostille process for uploaded documents commencing in Chennai during the first week of September. Applicants are now required to create a profile on the official e-Sanad website, upload their documents, and complete payments via Bharatkosh. The authenticity of these documents is then verified by the respective issuing authority, such as a university or educational institution.

The updated system also provides applicants with the ability to track the status of their applications online. This simplification is intended to assist Indian nationals pursuing foreign employment, those residing abroad, and individuals seeking international education by facilitating the attestation of their personal, educational, and commercial documents.
