Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has announced that maintenance grants will be reintroduced for some university students in England by 2029. This initiative is designed to support tens of thousands of students from lower-income households, particularly those enrolled in courses deemed priority areas for the government’s industrial strategy. Unlike maintenance loans, these grants will not require repayment from students. The funding for this program will come from a new levy on international student fees, which will apply only to institutions within England. Maintenance grants were previously abolished ten years ago. The reintroduction aims to benefit students pursuing university degrees, other higher education courses, and technical qualifications.
