Jeffrey Archer, a celebrated author and former British politician, has passed away at the age of 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, announced that he died suddenly and peacefully at his home on Monday.
Archer was renowned for his prolific writing career, spanning five decades and selling over 300 million books worldwide. He is best known for popular novels such as Kane and Abel and the Clifton Chronicles. His editor at HarperCollins UK described him as a writer who brought joy to many readers and a true friend.
In addition to his literary achievements, Archer had a notable political career as a former Conservative Member of Parliament. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1969 and later served as deputy chairman of the Conservative Party. His political path was significantly impacted by a conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice, leading to a prison sentence in 2001. He was released in 2003 and later returned to the House of Lords, retiring in 2024.
