Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently commented on the effectiveness of US tariff policies and the impact of sanctions on Russia. Speaking on Russia’s Channel 1 TV, Lavrov asserted that US threats of tariffs against India and China are proving ineffective, suggesting a growing understanding in Washington of the futility of such an approach with these “ancient civilisations.”
He characterized the US strategy as demanding countries cease actions deemed undesirable or face tariff imposition, arguing that this method “won’t work.” Lavrov further stated that these tariffs undermine economic well-being, create significant difficulties, and compel affected nations to seek alternative markets and energy sources, potentially at higher costs.
Regarding new sanctions against Russia, Lavrov indicated he saw no significant issue, noting that Russia has adapted to numerous sanctions imposed during previous US administrations. He also claimed that sanctions during President Joe Biden’s term were utilized as a substitute for diplomatic efforts, lacking a search for compromise.
