Sushila Karki has formally taken office as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, marking her as the first woman to lead the nation. Her appointment on Friday night, following the fall of the K P Sharma Oli government and subsequent violent protests, aims to resolve a political vacuum. President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath and simultaneously dissolved the House of Representatives, tasking the interim government with holding parliamentary elections within six months.

In her initial actions, Prime Minister Karki declared individuals who died in recent protests as “martyrs” and announced government-covered relief. She directed hospitals to provide free medical care for injured protesters, a directive that has reportedly begun to be implemented. On Saturday, Karki visited injured protesters receiving treatment in Kathmandu hospitals. Internationally, the United States has welcomed Karki’s appointment, citing it as a step toward stability for Nepal.
