A newborn girl has allegedly been strangled to death within the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of a hospital in Ashoknagar, Madhya Pradesh. Police officials stated on Sunday that they suspect the involvement of the baby’s mother or grandmother in the incident.
The baby, born on Friday night, was admitted to the SNCU shortly after birth. She was discovered deceased on Saturday afternoon. According to investigators, both the baby’s mother and grandmother were present at the SNCU at the time.
Police are investigating the death and indicated a strong suspicion that either the mother or grandmother was responsible for the strangulation, with suspicion leaning more towards the mother. A doctor who performed the post-mortem reportedly found marks around the baby’s neck consistent with strangulation, though the autopsy report is still awaited.
Investigators are exploring the possibility that the family may have killed the child to avoid having a third daughter. The lack of CCTV cameras inside the SNCU means there is no footage of the incident. Police are currently recording statements and gathering evidence.
