Puducherry is introducing a QR code-based system in its municipalities to ensure complete door-to-door waste collection. This initiative aims to track sanitation workers’ visits and identify any service gaps.
The system involves affixing QR code stickers to nearly 190,000 houses across Puducherry and Oulgaret municipalities. These stickers will contain house details and a phone number for residents to report issues. Sanitation workers will scan the codes during their rounds, with data uploaded online for monitoring by officials from the private firm managing waste and the Local Administration Department.
An official from the Local Administration Department stated that this system will help manage the approximately 450 tonnes of waste generated daily and monitor waste segregation. Daily reports will be generated to identify and address shortcomings.
However, the Puducherry State Sanitation Workers’ Union has urged the government to reconsider the move. The union president, Moorthy, stated that the QR code system would increase the workload for sanitation workers, who are already facing heavy duties and staff shortages. He suggested that authorities should focus on addressing wage and staffing issues instead.
