Romania’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed the detection of a Russian drone within its national airspace. The incident occurred while two F-16 fighter jets were conducting monitoring operations along the country’s border with Ukraine, following recent Russian air attacks targeting Ukrainian infrastructure on the Danube River.
This event marks the second such reported incursion into a NATO member’s airspace, with Poland previously stating it had intercepted and shot down at least three Russian drones that entered its territory on Wednesday. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, attributed the drones entering Polish airspace to an accident caused by jammed navigation systems.
In response to the broader pattern of drone activities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that the Russian military “knows exactly where their drones are headed and how long they can operate in the air.”
