Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan was released from Sitapur jail today, concluding a 23-month period of detention. His release follows an acquittal last week by a special MP-MLA court in a 17-year-old case dating back to 2008, which involved charges of road blockade and damage to public property.
Ahead of his release, prohibitory orders under Section 144 were reportedly enforced across Sitapur city. Reacting to the development, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav remarked that “justice was done.” Previously, SP MLA Shivpal Singh Yadav had alleged that Azam Khan had been “framed” in false cases by the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.
