Dr. G. Moinoddin, Director South India (Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery) at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, has highlighted increasing obesity rates in southern Indian states, particularly Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. He attributes this observed pattern, affecting individuals aged 15 to 49 years, to a combination of factors, including excess carbohydrate consumption, a diet high in processed foods lacking nutritional value, and a sedentary lifestyle. Metabolic issues such as insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, and PCOS were also cited as contributing factors, according to a study mentioned.
Individuals experiencing obesity with symptoms like hypertension and high blood sugar are considered to have ‘metabolic syndrome,’ placing them at a higher risk for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Dr. Moinoddin suggests incorporating pulses, legumes, dairy, fish, and eggs into the diet. For persons with obesity or underlying health issues, he describes bariatric surgery as the most effective treatment option, explaining that minimally invasive techniques have made these procedures easier to limit food intake and promote sustainable weight loss.
