Ukraine has stated that SpaceX has limited the use of its Starlink satellite internet services for military purposes, specifically impacting drone missions and air defense capabilities. This complaint has brought attention to the differences between Starlink, a commercial service, and Starshield, a military version.
Elon Musk, owner of SpaceX, clarified that Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government, with any usage restrictions determined by the military. He stated that Starlink is a commercial service for civilian and defensive use, not for offensive military actions, as it would be inappropriate for a commercial company.
Starlink, comprising over 11,000 satellites, provides broadband internet to millions of users globally, including households, businesses, and airlines. Starshield, on the other hand, is a business unit developed for the Pentagon, offering secure communications, Earth observation, and payload integration for military and intelligence missions. Although their missions are separate, Starshield relies on the Starlink constellation as its backbone.
