The State Crime Branch has formally commenced its investigation into the escape of Govindachamy, a convict serving a life sentence for rape and murder, from Kannur Central Jail. The detailed inquiry, scheduled to begin on September 25, 2025, will focus on examining potential security lapses within the prison and any assistance the convict may have received during his jailbreak on July 25.
Govindachamy was apprehended by Kannur Town police within hours of his escape and is currently lodged at Viyyur Jail in Thrissur. The investigation, transferred from local police by order of the State Police Chief, will also review the initial police probe for any deficiencies. The Crime Branch has sought court permission to interrogate Govindachamy and plans to question prison staff and fellow inmates to determine how the escape occurred and if cell bars were cut. Govindachamy was convicted in 2011 for the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman on a train, with his initial death sentence later commuted to life imprisonment.
