Tamil Nadu Minister Vanni Arasu has directed officials to inspect and continuously monitor 80 waterbodies in the Tindivanam Assembly constituency as part of preparations for the Northeast monsoon. The Minister chaired a review meeting in Tindivanam, instructing departments to complete precautionary measures in vulnerable areas and ensure relief shelters and rescue equipment are ready.
Officials were also instructed to expedite the desilting of channels and prevent rainwater accumulation, with specific attention to waterlogging-prone areas in Tindivanam municipality. Preventive work is to be completed without delay in areas affected by last year’s monsoon, and pending road and drainage works are to be expedited.
The Minister emphasized the importance of removing damaged or hazardous trees, preventing branches from contacting electricity lines, and ensuring uninterrupted power supply. Relief shelters must be equipped with drinking water, electricity, and toilets, and rescue equipment, including motor pumps and motorboats, should be inspected and kept ready.
Furthermore, officials were directed to ensure chlorinated drinking water, intensify mosquito control to prevent disease spread, and arrange for volunteers to supply essential commodities to affected families. Early-warning systems have been installed along the coast, and trained first responders have been identified in Tindivanam and Marakkanam. The Minister stressed the need for inter-departmental coordination with public safety as the top priority during heavy rains and flooding. Residents can report emergencies to the district disaster control room.
