Current trends in political violence are significantly influenced by two primary factors: the proliferation of social media and the widespread availability of lethal weapons. Experts observe an acceleration in radicalization due to the growth of online networks fostering conspiracy theories, which reduces opportunities for intervention. Multiple factors contribute to this rise, accompanied by an increase in public support for political violence as indicated by recent surveys. While historical trends show more violence from the far right, today’s actors are described as more ideologically diffuse. The path to violence often involves unaddressed underlying risk factors in individuals’ lives, with ideology frequently emerging later. The reactions of political figures can either exacerbate or mitigate tensions. Additionally, a reduction in federal grant programs for local jurisdictions and decreased investment in prevention initiatives for terrorism and targeted violence are noted. Despite these challenges, the article suggests that an ongoing increase in violence is not predetermined.
