A United Nations commission investigating the ongoing conflict in Gaza has released its most comprehensive findings to date, stating that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. This represents the panel’s most sweeping conclusion regarding the Israeli government’s conduct in the conflict, following previous reports that identified war crimes and crimes against humanity by Israel.
The commission, whose focus intensified after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, also found that armed Palestinian groups committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, including sexual violence, during the October 7 attack.
In a related legal context, a court previously permitted a genocide case against Israel to proceed, directing the Israeli government to take actions to prevent genocidal acts by its forces in Gaza. The UN report further indicates that it does not preclude future investigations into whether genocide has been committed in the West Bank or by Hamas in its October 7 attack.
