Kerala Healthcare: Examining the Role of Missionary Institutions

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently asserted that Kerala’s healthcare model, widely recognized for its efficacy, is significantly influenced by both progressive state policies and the contributions of Christian missionary hospitals. Delivering the Adenwalla Memorial Oration during ‘Pelecanus 2025’ at the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute in Thrissur, Mr. Tharoor highlighted the enduring presence and evolving mission of the Catholic Church in Kerala’s healthcare sector. He characterized Christian medical institutions as integral “pillars of public health,” combining clinical excellence with a service-oriented approach, and noted their operation of numerous nursing colleges and hospitals within the state.

Mr. Tharoor drew a distinction between the operational principles of corporate hospitals, which he suggested often prioritize revenue, and the emphasis on compassion observed in missionary healthcare. He advocated for a balanced approach, urging the integration of corporate efficiency with the compassionate ethos of missionary institutions. The MP underscored the importance of ensuring that corporate resources are utilized to advance both equity and excellence in healthcare provision. During the event, the Monsignor Mathew Muringathery Memorial National level Health care and Missionary Award was conferred upon Ajit Ronald Gurubachan Singh.
