Accelerating India's Green Transition: Experts Emphasize Private Capital and Data Solutions

Climate finance experts have underscored key requirements for advancing India's green transition, advocating for innovative capital models, the availability of reliable data, and increased participation from the private sector. Vivekanandhan, Lead-ESG and Sustainable Finance at Samunnati Finance, highlighted that agriculture, despite its economic significance, frequently remains outside mainstream green finance. He stressed the necessity for targeted investments to bolster the sector's resilience to climate challenges, noting Samunnati Finance's focus on integrating agricultural micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and farmer-producer organizations into green financing initiatives.

Panelists emphasized that while public capital must continue to fund climate resilience projects with deep social impact but no direct financial returns, scaling green financing from billions to trillions will demand decisive private capital involvement. A significant obstacle identified was the absence of reliable, granular datasets, which limits the precision and scale of climate-related investments due to varying local conditions. Furthermore, Chengappa's team is reportedly developing a climate tech finance incubator designed to offer timely and customized support for early-stage innovators in the field.
