The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to propose new offshore oil and gas drilling in waters off the California coast and in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. If implemented, this would represent the first new drilling proposal for California in approximately four decades.
According to sources briefed on the matter, the Interior Department may announce the initiative as early as this week. The proposal is anticipated to elicit opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who has consistently opposed offshore drilling. Furthermore, the plan for new leasing in the eastern Gulf of Mexico—dubbed the "Gulf of America" by President Trump—could face resistance from Florida Republicans, who have previously opposed such drilling following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster and its economic impact on the state's tourism sector.
