The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has recently challenged the progress and feasibility of Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, urging Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to demonstrate concrete development. During a media address, YSRCP leaders, including former Minister Velampalli Srinivas, claimed that much of the discussion surrounding Amaravati's development has remained rhetorical, lacking significant tangible outcomes. They asserted that Vijayawada city has seen minimal development under the current TDP government, contrasting it with various projects undertaken during the YSRCP's tenure.

As an alternative, the YSRCP proposed the 'MAVIGUN' concept—referring to the Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur region—as a practical and economically viable model for a mega-city. They suggested that focusing on railway infrastructure development and the construction of a seaport at Machilipatnam would facilitate balanced regional growth. The party alleged that the projected ₹2 lakh crore expenditure for Amaravati would impose a substantial financial burden on future generations, positioning the MAVIGUN strategy as a more economical and feasible alternative for the state's development. YSRCP leaders also highlighted specific infrastructure projects completed during their previous administration while criticizing the TDP government's performance on other key infrastructure initiatives.
