Andhra Pradesh MP Calls for Federal Investigation into Illicit Liquor Operations

YSRCP Member of Parliament Midhun Reddy has formally urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the reported prevalence of spurious liquor in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy characterized the situation as a “large-scale, organised inter-State crime”, emphasizing the need for federal intervention.

The MP expressed significant concern over fatalities attributed to counterfeit liquor, allegedly containing toxic chemicals such as methanol, affecting particularly vulnerable populations. Seizures of fraudulent bottles and packaging materials indicate the presence of a sophisticated criminal network operating across state borders and multiple districts. Reddy’s proposal includes a comprehensive CBI investigation, coordinating with agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau, State Police, Excise Department, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

He further recommended stricter controls on industrial alcohol, mechanisms to prevent its illicit diversion, and improved intelligence-sharing among states to dismantle the networks involved in the production and distribution of spurious liquor, citing it as a growing public health and law enforcement issue.
