Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a new communication protocol, stating that all future updates and statements regarding the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg will be exclusively delivered via Facebook Live. This decision, made public on Saturday, aims to prevent what the Chief Minister described as “miscommunication” and potential “unnecessary tension among the public” often arising from selected press excerpts.
Zubeen Garg, a 52-year-old Assamese cultural icon, passed away on September 19 in Singapore, where he was attending the North East India Festival. His death occurred under “mysterious circumstances while swimming.” In response, the Assam government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and separately appointed a one-member judicial commission on Friday to examine the facts surrounding his demise. The Assam Police CID’s ongoing probe has led to the arrests of several individuals, including Garg’s manager, the festival organiser, and two members of his band. One of the arrested band members reportedly alleged that Garg was “poisoned” in Singapore. To date, more than 60 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed across Assam against approximately ten individuals involved in the case.
