Assam Opposition Raises Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revision Process

On January 25, 2026, leaders from the Congress party and five other opposition political parties in Assam submitted a memorandum to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer. The memorandum alleges the filing of numerous fraudulent objections during the ongoing Special Revision (SR) exercise for the electoral roll. These objections, reportedly lodged between December 27, 2025, and January 22, 2026, primarily cite voter death or permanent relocation as grounds for removal. The political parties claim that notices issued to targeted voters did not specify the reasons for objection, which they state constitutes a violation of Rule 17 of the Registration of Electoral Rules, 1960. Furthermore, the memorandum details instances where listed objectors have reportedly come forward to declare they were unaware their identification and contact details were utilized to file these objections.
