Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently concluded a visit to Papua New Guinea, where he secured a joint communique with Prime Minister James Marape. While a major defence treaty was not signed during this visit, discussions for such an agreement are expected to follow cabinet considerations in both countries. Mr. Albanese characterized the communique as the commencement of a “partnership that will shape the future,” acknowledging Australia’s historical role in governing PNG.

Separately, a commission report addressing a proposed new stadium in Tasmania revealed that the ratio of economic benefits to costs is projected to be less than 0.5, indicating that the anticipated costs will be approximately twice the expected economic advantages.
