Balagere Residents Raise Concerns Over Stormwater Drainage System

Residents of Balagere have articulated concerns regarding the design and efficacy of the local storm water drain system, known as a rajakaluve. They allege that the current design directs rainwater from multiple sides without a proper exit, resulting in water stagnation and blockages.

Specific criticisms include the presence of what residents identify as a manhole within the rajakaluve, which they claim diverts stormwater directly into a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) built solely for sewage processing. This diversion is described as contrary to standard practice, where stormwater is typically meant to bypass STPs and flow into natural water bodies like lakes. Residents also point to an incorrect gradient as a contributing factor to the drain’s inability to function efficiently.

These issues are reportedly linked to incidents of water stagnation and, during heavy rainfall, two-wheelers being pulled towards open drains amidst sewage. In response, residents have filed numerous complaints and petitions, including communications to the Chief Minister’s office. High-ranking officials, including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, are reported to have inspected the area on multiple occasions.
