BBC Upholds Impartiality Complaints Regarding Presenter's Script Change

The BBC's Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) has upheld 20 complaints regarding impartiality following an incident involving presenter Martine Croxall. During a live broadcast on the BBC News Channel earlier this year, Ms. Croxall altered a script, changing the phrase "pregnant people" to "women." The ECU determined that her subsequent facial expression conveyed "a controversial view about trans people."

The ECU's findings also noted that the original script was clumsily worded, incorporating phrases such as "the aged" – which is not consistent with BBC style – and "pregnant people," a term that did not align with the subsequent audio clip from the featured researcher, Malcolm Mistry. The outcome of the investigation was communicated to BBC News management and discussed with Ms. Croxall and the editorial team involved.
