Bengaluru's Pedestrian Infrastructure: Proposals and Perspectives on Skywalks

Bengaluru is addressing challenges within its pedestrian infrastructure, specifically concerning existing foot overbridges (FOBs) and skywalks. These structures have reportedly led to issues such as footpath obstruction and unauthorized waste accumulation beneath their staircases. Despite past efforts by groups like “The Ugly Indians” to improve specific “black spots” near existing skywalks, concerns persist.

In a move to alleviate traffic congestion caused by pedestrian crossings, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has submitted a proposal to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) for the construction of 78 new skywalks across the city. The proposed locations for these developments include key areas such as ITPL Road, Outer Ring Road, Varthur to Old Airport Road, Whitefield Main Road, Cubbon Road, Kanakapura Road, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Main Road, and Dr. Rajkumar Road.

However, expert analysis offers alternative perspectives on pedestrian crossing solutions. S. Velmurugan, chief scientist and head of the Traffic Engineering and Safety Division at the Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, suggests that conventional skywalks and FOBs may be inefficient due to the extended time required for pedestrians to cross. He advocates for preferred alternatives such as at-grade crossings, speed tables, or tabletop crossings, emphasizing the importance of development that is not exclusively focused on vehicular traffic.
