Border Incident in Tripura: India and Bangladesh Offer Conflicting Accounts of Deaths

A diplomatic exchange has emerged between India and Bangladesh following the deaths of three Bangladeshi nationals on October 15, 2025, approximately three kilometers inside Indian territory in Tripura.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asserted that the individuals, identified as smugglers, died during an altercation after illegally crossing the international border and attempting to steal cattle from Bidyabil village. The MEA explicitly rejected claims from Dhaka that the men were lynched by a mob.

Conversely, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) lodged a strong protest, stating that its citizens had been subjected to a “brutal beating and killing by a mob” in Tripura after crossing the border illegally. This incident underscores ongoing challenges with cross-border crimes, including cattle smuggling and illegal infiltration, along the 856-kilometer border shared by Tripura and Bangladesh.
