Former U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in an exchange with John Lyons, Americas editor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), on the White House lawn. Lyons posed a question regarding the appropriateness of a U.S. president conducting personal business while in office. Trump responded by stating that his children manage his businesses and then inquired about Lyons’ origin. Trump subsequently stated that Lyons was “hurting Australia” with his questioning, suggesting he set a “very bad tone” and could “set a nicer tone,” before concluding with “Quiet.”

Separately, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated his expectation of meeting Trump. This follows an earlier meeting cancellation at the G20 summit in June. Albanese specified that he anticipates encountering Trump in New York during a reception for world leaders, as well as at other upcoming international summits.
