Dr. Hema Sane, a distinguished botanist and author, passed away on September 19 at the age of 85. She served as an educator at Garware College from 1962 until her retirement in 2000. Her published works include academic texts such as Medicinal Plants and Plant Morphology and Anatomy, as well as books like Marg Shashwat Vikasawa, which explored sustainable development.
Dr. Sane was known for her commitment to a minimalist and sustainable lifestyle. She notably lived without electricity in her home, a practice she explained as a continuation of generational tradition, and maintained a limited wardrobe. According to Manish Agarwal, her long-time friend and caregiver, Dr. Sane was a voracious reader and a principled individual. She had been ill for several days but reportedly declined hospitalization. Her body is at Sassoon Hospital, with last rites scheduled for Sunday.
