A missile strike hit the Al Jamia mosque in El Fasher, Sudan, during early morning prayers, causing multiple fatalities. The mosque was reportedly full of worshipers at the time of the incident. Among those confirmed deceased was Dr. Omar Selik, a physician who had recently communicated the severe humanitarian conditions for an estimated 260,000 civilians trapped in El Fasher, including acute food scarcity and instances of malnourished children consuming animal feed.
The attack took place in the context of a siege led by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The RSF has been engaged in an ongoing conflict with Sudan’s military since April 2023. Following their withdrawal from the capital, Khartoum, in March, the RSF has consolidated its operations within its stronghold of Darfur.
