Technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly encouraged individuals to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, citing the company’s content inclusion policies and what he described as “woke bias.” Over a three-day period, Musk posted or reposted calls to cancel the streaming service at least 26 times.
His commentary began with a post expressing disapproval over a clip from the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which features a transgender character. This series, which aired 20 episodes in 2022, was canceled by Netflix the following year. Musk also commented “Cancel Netflix” on a post referencing the company’s 2023 diversity and inclusion report.
Musk is the father of a transgender daughter, Vivian Wilson, who has publicly expressed disagreement with his public statements concerning transgender issues. Netflix has not publicly responded to Musk’s recent calls. The company’s executives have previously invoked free speech principles when addressing content-related backlashes, notably in 2021 when co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended comedian Dave Chappelle’s special, which had prompted an employee walkout.
