The UK government has announced significant revisions to the English national curriculum, aiming to modernize educational content while retaining foundational subjects. Key changes will introduce topics such as budgeting, mortgages, and artificial intelligence into the curriculum for students in English schools.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated the government's intention to "revitalise" the curriculum, emphasizing a commitment to core subjects like English, mathematics, and reading. While head teachers largely deemed the review's recommendations "sensible," they highlighted the necessity of "sufficient funding and teachers" for successful implementation.

Among the adopted recommendations is the decision to scrap the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), a school progress measure introduced in 2010 that assessed pupil performance across specific academic subjects. The government also confirmed it would proceed with reading tests for Year 8 pupils, diverging from the review's suggestion of compulsory English and maths tests for that age group. Ministers indicate a careful, thorough implementation process, providing schools with four terms' notice before the new curriculum takes effect. The curriculum and assessment review was led by Professor Becky Francis.
