Estonia has formally requested a consultation with other NATO member states following a reported airspace violation by Russian warplanes on Friday.
A NATO spokesperson confirmed that the military alliance “responded immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft,” characterizing the event as “yet another example of Russian behaviour.” Conversely, Russia denied that its jets had breached Estonian airspace.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna described the 12-minute incursion into Estonian airspace as a “clear provocation,” urging NATO members to show unity in their response. He also referenced previous reported incidents, stating Russia had violated Estonia’s airspace four times in 2025, a year which appears to be a typographical error in the source material.
Estonian authorities indicated the aircraft entered its airspace from the north-east and were intercepted by Finnish jets over the Gulf of Finland. This incident follows recent claims by NATO members Poland and Romania of Russian drone breaches into their respective airspaces.
