On a Thursday, an incident involving a car ramming and a subsequent stabbing took place outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester, England. The Greater Manchester Police characterized the event as an act of terrorism.
The assault resulted in the deaths of two individuals and seriously wounded four others. Police identified the perpetrator as Jihad al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, who was shot and killed by officers at the scene. He was observed wearing a vest that had the appearance of an explosive device, which investigators later determined was not functional.
Counterterrorism investigators are currently examining the incident to understand the motivation behind the attack. In connection with the ongoing investigation, three other individuals—two men in their 30s and a woman in their 60s—have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses.
