An eight-vehicle collision, involving four commercial trucks, on a California freeway resulted in three fatalities and four critical injuries. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers arrested 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh of Yuba City in connection with the incident on suspicion of driving a truck while under the influence of drugs. Mr. Singh is currently detained without bail at the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino County.
According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials, cited by CBS News, Mr. Singh is an Indian national who reportedly entered the United States illegally via the US-Mexico border in 2022. The CHP is also investigating whether he possessed a valid commercial driver's license at the time of the crash.
In a related development, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to withhold $40 million in federal funds from California. This action is attributed to the state's alleged failure to enforce federal English language requirements for commercial truck drivers, citing a previous instance involving another Indian national who reportedly entered the U.S. illegally and obtained a California commercial license.
