Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been appointed to senior advisory roles at two prominent US technology companies, Microsoft and Anthropic.

Sunak, who served as prime minister from October 2022 to July 2024, stated his new positions would involve providing high-level strategic perspectives on macro-economic and geopolitical trends. He affirmed that he would not advise on UK policy matters and that the roles would be internally oriented, without involving lobbying. This development follows previous interactions with Microsoft during his premiership, including the announcement of a £2.5 billion investment in datacentres at the Bletchley Park AI summit in November 2023.

An Anthropic spokesperson welcomed Sunak, citing his past recognition of artificial intelligence’s transformative potential, his establishment of the world’s first AI Safety Institute, and his convening of the inaugural AI Safety Summit. They anticipate his experience will offer valuable strategic perspective. Separately, Liam Booth-Smith, Sunak’s former senior political adviser, also commenced a role with Anthropic in June.
