Framework Agreement Outlined for TikTok's US Operations

US President Donald Trump announced an agreement regarding the continued operation of the TikTok platform within the United States. He stated a deal had been reached with China and that he intended to speak with President Xi Jinping for confirmation. This announcement follows previous delays of a proposed ban on the social media application. A buyer for TikTok is reportedly forthcoming, and US technology firm Oracle is expected to maintain its role hosting TikTok servers in the US. This addresses concerns from American lawmakers regarding data security and potential sharing with China on national security grounds.

Separately, a US trade delegation confirmed a “framework” deal with China amidst broader trade discussions. China acknowledged the framework agreement but asserted that any deal would not be made at the expense of its firms’ interests. A Chinese cyberspace administration official suggested the agreement could include licensing of algorithms and other intellectual property rights, noting that the Chinese government would examine and approve relevant matters concerning TikTok, such as technology export and intellectual property licensing.
