Gaza Ceasefire Tensions: Israeli Airstrikes and Mutual Allegations of Violations

Israeli forces reportedly conducted airstrikes in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Sunday. Local media outlets, including the Times of Israel, claimed these strikes followed an attack on Israeli troops in the area by individuals described as “terror operatives” from the Gaza Strip. Israeli public broadcaster Kan also reported the air force engaging in attacks in Rafah.

At the time of reporting, there was no official statement from either the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) or Hamas regarding the reported incident. In contrast, the government media office in Gaza asserted on Saturday that Israel had committed 47 violations since the ceasefire agreement began, resulting in 38 deaths and 143 injuries, according to Reuters.

Separately, the Israeli military had stated on Friday that “several terrorists” had opened fire on soldiers in the Rafah area, causing no injuries. Furthermore, both parties are reportedly engaged in a dispute over the return of deceased hostages, with Israel demanding Hamas fulfill obligations regarding the bodies of 28 individuals.

The first phase of the current ceasefire agreement includes provisions for the release of the remaining 48 hostages held by Hamas—approximately 20 of whom are believed to be alive—in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. It also mandates a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza’s main cities. This agreement was established in the context of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas-led militants.
