Ahead of the forthcoming UN climate summit (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, representing 134 companies across 27 nations, has issued an open letter to global governments. This initiative, part of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) decarbonisation efforts, advocates for an expedited transition to a low-carbon, resilient economy.
The letter emphasizes the importance of enhanced public-private collaboration and outlines key areas for policy focus. These include establishing more stable policy frameworks, streamlining permitting processes, increasing climate finance, fostering breakthrough technologies, phasing out unabated fossil fuels, and boosting investments in nature and resilience.
Sebastian Buckup, Managing Director for the Centre for Nature and Climate at the WEF, commented that climate action functions as a driver for green growth, innovation, and resilience. He urged governments and business leaders to take decisive steps to realize the full potential of the climate economy.
The Alliance's communication also notes that corporate leaders have made substantial investments in low-carbon and climate-resilient businesses, illustrating that climate initiatives can generate long-term value. Despite these efforts, the letter indicates that this momentum currently "faces strong headwinds."
