Global climate discussions held over two weeks in Brazil concluded with several key outcomes.

Participants reached a voluntary agreement to initiate discussions on a roadmap for the eventual phase-out of fossil fuels. This progress was achieved despite notable opposition from oil-producing nations. More than 80 countries had expressed support for a transition away from fossil fuels, while other countries resisted the inclusion of such a measure.

Concurrently, developing countries secured a tripling of financial support from wealthier nations. This funding aims to assist developing countries in adapting to the impacts of the climate crisis. Teresa Anderson of ActionAid International commented that a lack of climate finance impedes progress, emphasizing the need for support for Global South countries facing climate crisis costs.

The conference text also urged countries towards the “full implementation of NDCs while striving to do better,” referring to national climate commitments. Additionally, more than 90 countries endorsed enhanced protection for forests.
