Greenlandic Mother Regains Custody in Danish Legal Case

A Greenlandic mother, Ivana Bronlund, successfully regained custody of her child in Denmark, subsequently posting on social media that her “heart is whole again.”

This legal outcome occurred amidst heightened public and political discourse in Denmark concerning Greenland, an island that gained extensive autonomy after more than 300 years as a Danish colony. Discussions regarding its colonial past and experiences of discrimination continue to be present in the public sphere.

The case drew considerable attention, prompting small protests and celebrations among activists. Najannguaq Hegelund, vice chairman of the Indigenous rights group Sila 360, expressed satisfaction for Bronlund’s family but also raised concerns about “many other cases with the same flaws.”

During the process, Ms. Bronlund underwent a comprehensive parenting evaluation. This assessment included interviews with psychologists, meetings with social workers, standardized psychological evaluations, and IQ tests, which she indicated she found challenging. She also stated that she had experienced personal hardship during her childhood.
