Authorities responded to a vehicle ramming and stabbing incident outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester, northwestern England. The event, which occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, resulted in the deaths of two members of the Jewish community. Multiple individuals sustained injuries; one victim was stabbed and is in serious condition, another was struck by the vehicle, and a third sought medical attention for an injury potentially sustained as officers intervened.
Greater Manchester Police officers fatally shot a suspect within seven minutes of receiving the initial call. A witness’s prompt notification to authorities reportedly prevented the individual from entering the synagogue, allowing a significant number of people inside to be safely evacuated. While a device was discovered at the scene, it was later determined to be non-viable. The investigation has led to the arrest of three suspects on suspicion of commissioning, preparing, or instigating acts of terrorism.
