Researchers from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), in collaboration with IISc’s Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) in Bengaluru, have developed a novel battery technology. This innovation is presented as a potential alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries, which are known for their susceptibility to overheating and explosion hazards.

The new battery is designed for efficient and reliable energy storage, reportedly maintaining 96.77% of its power after 150 charge-discharge cycles, indicating sustained performance over time. A notable characteristic is its flexibility, remaining operational even when bent or folded completely. This feature was demonstrated by continuously powering an LCD display while the battery was bent at extreme angles.

Scientists employed advanced microscopic tools, including electron microscopes and spectroscopic techniques, to ensure optimal component balance and rigorously test the battery’s efficiency, durability, and flexibility. Potential applications for this technology include flexible smartphones, enhanced safety in electric vehicles, and integrated wearable devices.
