BytePe, an Indian startup led by Founder and CEO Jayant Jha, has launched a new “smart ownership” model for smartphones, described as the country’s first subscription-based service for devices. This initiative aims to address the affordability challenges associated with premium smartphones by allowing consumers to pay only for the value they use. The model offers customized EMI structures, integrated with either existing credit card financing or BytePe’s proprietary lending system. Jha indicated that this approach could significantly reduce monthly payments; for example, a device’s EMI might decrease from approximately Rs 7,400 to Rs 3,899. BytePe also provides users with options to upgrade or retain their smartphones and operates with a team of 30-35 employees based in Bangalore and Delhi.
