Israeli forces have intercepted a flotilla of boats, identified as the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), carrying humanitarian aid en route to the Gaza Strip. The operation resulted in the detention of hundreds of activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the individuals are being transferred to an Israeli port for deportation, with assurances that all those detained are “safe and in good health.”
While Israel stated that no vessels breached the designated blockade zone, GSF tracking indicated that one of its boats, the Mikeno, may have entered Gaza’s territorial waters before contact was lost. The incident drew criticism from Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard, who characterized Israel’s blockade on Gaza as “unlawful.” A legal team member for the GSF has indicated plans for additional attempts to breach the blockade in the near future.
