The Israeli military has announced the retrieval of the body of Master Sgt Ran Gvili from a cemetery near Gaza City. Gvili was reported as having been killed on October 7, 2023, with his body subsequently held in Gaza, and was described as the final hostage whose remains were recovered from the area.
The military indicated it had been searching for Gvili since the ceasefire with Hamas began in October, stating that a clarification of existing intelligence enabled the recent search. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized Gvili's return as an "extraordinary achievement," affirming a pledge to bring everyone back.
The Israeli military further stated that with this retrieval, all bodies of individuals identified as hostages from the Gaza Strip area have been returned. It also claimed that this development paves the way for the next phase of US President Donald Trump's peace plan to commence, noting that Israel had previously resisted advancing until Gvili was located. Prime Minister Netanyahu additionally mentioned having sent soldiers into Gaza with objectives to return hostages and defeat Hamas.
