Japanese Electronics Firms Adjust Strategies for Expanding Indian Market

The Indian consumer electronics market is projected to expand significantly, reaching an estimated $130-150 billion by 2029, according to Redseer. This anticipated growth is prompting Japanese electronics brands to either re-enter or revise their strategies within the country. Companies like JVC, which had previously faded from the market, are now returning, while established players such as Sony, Panasonic, and Hitachi are reconfiguring their approaches. These strategic adjustments include a focus on more profitable large-screen televisions, a withdrawal from low-margin entry segments, and an avoidance of direct price competition with Chinese rivals. The overall objective for these brands is to regain market share. As an example of activity in the sector, Sony India reported ₹7,663 crore in sales and a net profit of ₹168 crore in FY24.
